Good Guide for Anyone New to Area
Just spent three days fishing in the GSMNP in eastern Tennessee,
and found Mr. Jacobs book to be right on target. A lot of the
information can be found from local flyshops, but his book really
helped plan our trip in advance. Coupling this book with local
advice is a formula for success.
A reader from Linden, Tennessee , 04/04/98, rating=9:
Excellent book for trout fishing in the South...
"Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia" is an outstanding
book for people who want to fish for trout in the Appalachian
Mountain regions of Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina
and Tennessee. It gives locations, access points, fly patterns
and hatches for the best trout streams in the South. It is well
written and the reader can see that the author put in many hours
of research in writing this book. I just wish there were more
books written on this subject.

A Complete Tour Guide to the Mountains of Northeast Georgia, East
Tennessee, Western North Carolina
Book Description :
The latest travel book by Cathy and Vernon Summerlin, Traveling
the Southern Highlands, is an informative and entertaining guide
to the southeast's mountainous regions exploring areas from the
Great Smoky Mountains to the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Summerlins
show all there is to see and do in this beautifully unspoiled
area of the country including helpful information on the best
restaurants, and the best places to stay the night in homestyle
comfort. In order to get the most out of the vacation, the book
guides travelers through loop tours of certain areas of the region
enabling them to see more of the roads less traveled. Cathy and
Vernon Summerlin have painstakingly researched each location and
personally sampled the majority of the inns, restaurants, and
attractions that they recommend. By traveling the area extensively,
the Summerlins share adventures, history of the region, and stories
of the personalities of the places that they have visited. You
almost feel that you are already there while you read about the
people they met or meals they enjoyed. So the next time you visit
the southern highlands, take a little experience with you in Traveling
the Southern Highlands.

From Kirkus Reviews , 06/01/97:
A respectfully cross-cultural, profoundly appreciative love
letter to the southern Appalachians--the Cherokee Mountains--from
Camuto (A Fly Fisherman's Blue Ridge, 1990). Camuto delves into
the landscape to get a glimpse of the past and transcend a present
in which ``the possibilities of genuine enchantment continually
recede.'' For him, that means deep immersion in the Cherokee way
of seeing their homeland (though he's smart enough to realize
he'll never truly be able to look with Cherokee eyes). He writes
not just of his response to the evergreen woods, but of how he
understands the Cherokee to have related to them; not only his
take on sacred places, but how they figured in the Cherokee cosmology.
Camuto is deeply smitten by this ancient, crumpled terrain. He
walks long and hard along aboriginal paths in search of wild encounters;
tenders intimate, vivid, timeless descriptions of his days afield;
leavens the proceedings with historical narratives, natural histories,
ethnologies. He limns the good--the Cherokee language and customs,
the reintroduction of the red wolf, the improvisational jazz to
be found in a veery's song; and the bad--the savagery and sadism
of the European conquest, cultural dismemberment, environmental
degradation, pauperization of the land's spirit, the loss of native
plants and animals, native ideas and images. Camuto's prose can
be tortured (describing a pileated woodpecker's ``scalloped flight,
a kind of iambic in the air'') and flagging (``De Soto moved on
unmoved''). But for the most part it strides quietly and in awe.
He beholds a remnant of old growth (``a diorama a bear would have
imagined''), reflects on how the red wolf deepens the woods, relishes
the pleasures of a campfire. Camuto is humble enough, nimble enough,
to sojourn successfully in these mythopoeic climes, conjuring
a place portrait of swarming, satisfying complexity. -- Copyright

Recommended Book, 10/01/97:
"I come from a race of storytellers," writes Sharyn
McCrumb in her introduction to the first complete collection of
her wonderfully rich and mordant short stories. "My father's
family--the Arrowoods and the McCourys--settled in the Smoky Mountains
of western North Carolina when the wilderness was still Indian
country." Like McCrumb's fine novels (She Walks These Hills
and a dozen others), these 24 stories link the mysteries of the
past with life in present-day Appalachia, using chains of words
stronger than any steel.
Harriet Klausner , 08/23/97, rating=10:
Beautiful and charming
FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN is a short story collection of some of
the best works by Sharyn McCrumb. Most of the collection has been
published elsewhere, but never in one book. The stories vary as
they include suspense, relationship dramas, and deep characterizations
that portray the people and land of the Southern Appalachian chain.
All the stories are quite good, especially the who-done-its. The relationship tales are also quite excellent. Tales like the honeymoon couple returning to his mountain roots ("Telling the Bees") or the marriage between a wannabe and a death row inmate ("Not All Brides Are Beautiful") are entirely different stories that share two things in common (along with some of the other stories): They are both extremely interesting and fun to read. This is a very diverse short story anthology from one of the best regional novelists today and is well worth reading.

A great book -- it helped me thru-hike the Appalachian Trail.
It taught me what I needed to know to successfully thru-hike the
A.T. The advice is straightforward, and the anecdotes make it
enjoyable to read.
The book is well written, including gear reviews, trail tips, advice and references for collecting additional information. While not enough to plan a hike solely on the basis of what is written, it surely is useful for AT day hikes, thru-hikes, or any hike you care to attempt. Best for beginner-to-intermediate level backpackers, but everyone can learn something new from it.

Reviews
Charles Frazier's debut novel, Cold Mountain, is a
story of a very long walk. In the waning months of the Civil War,
a wounded Confederate veteran named Inman gets up from his hospital
bed and begins the long journey back to his home in the remote
hills of North Carolina. Along the way he meets rogues and outlaws,
Good Samaritans and vigilantes, people who help and others who
hinder, but through it all Inman's aim is true: his one goal is
to return to Cold Mountain and to Ada, the woman he left behind.
The object of his affection, meanwhile has problems of her own.
Raised in the rarefied air of Charleston society, Ada was brought
to the backwoods of Cold Mountain by her father, a preacher who
came to the country for his health. Even after her father's death,
Ada remains there, partly to wait for Inman, but partly because
she senses her destiny lies not in the city but in the North Carolina
Blue Ridge.

Review
This is more than a simple guidebook to craft. It is the story
of people. People whose lives are colored by their art and whose
art colors the lives of anyone who comes to know their work. And
where are these people? They're "down the road a piece"
or "round the bend" or "within shoutin' distance".
And they're in this book. Consider for example, the following:
Under the roof of a 100-year-old chestnut barn somewhere outside
Sylva, a young woman patiently coaxes a human form out of a block
of marble in the method of a Renaissance master. This book is
an invitation. It invites you to discover a world you may have
no idea existed. But here in the mountains and hill country of
Western North Carolina, where you can see only as far as the next
bend, something of timeless grace unfolds.
